Union Budget 2025: What The Budget Means For India's Education System
Education: A Keystone for India's Progress
Investing in the Future
In the 2024 budget, India allocated an impressive Rs 1.48 lakh crore to education, employment, and skilling. The largest chunk of this, Rs 73,498 crore, went to the Department of School Education and Literacy.
Year after year, India has dedicated over 4% of its GDP to education, outpacing developed nations like the US (5%), Canada (5.5%), Japan (3.6%), and Germany (4.8%).
The Need for More
While India's education budget has grown steadily, experts argue it's still insufficient to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving job market.
"Providing quality education is a surefire way to build a skilled workforce that will boost India's GDP," said one expert.
A Global Imperative
History shows that developed nations have invested heavily in public education. By following in their footsteps, India can empower its youth with skills that will drive economic growth.
Embracing the National Education Policy
Poshak Agrawal, Co-founder of Athena Education, believes the government is committed to implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) with a focus on digital education and skill development.
Agrawal suggests allocating more funds to digital infrastructure, teacher training, and industry-aligned skill development programs.
Equipping Educators
Sumit Kumar, Chief Strategy Officer at TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, emphasizes the need for teacher training and capacity-building programs to empower educators.
Kumar also highlights the importance of prioritizing digital education, skill development, and infrastructure upgrades to achieve the NEP's ambitious goal of a 50% Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education.
